Congratulations! Soon you will have a new little member of your family. You have been waiting and anticipating meeting your sweet baby. And while you are excited, you probably have questions about what you will need as you bring baby home. There is a lot of information out there, but we wanted to share some of our favorite essentials to get you through the first few weeks. We would love for you to share your favorites too!
Here are just a few items that you should be thinking about.
It’s probably one of the first things you should buy while preparing for your new bundle of joy. Experts say it is best to buy a new one rather than using a hand-me-down to make sure it has the latest safety requirements. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is a great resource for car seat information. You can check out their web site www.nhtsa.gov . It’s always good to practice installing your new car seat before your baby arrives and to make sure it fits into your car. There are so many options on the market for car seats, so make sure to do a little research before your new family member arrives. We like the Orbit Baby Travel System G2 because it goes from car seat to stroller and back again and is one of the easiest to use and safest infant travel systems we’ve found. The innovative design includes a seat that swivels before locking, allowing for easy docking and easy loading from whatever angle works best! The G2 is fully loaded and has state-of-the-art features and function, including easy, one-hand collapse and 4-wheel stroller suspension for a smooth ride. Plus, the car seat features Oeko-Tex certified fabrics and foam!
A new baby will go through 70-80 diapers a week for the first few months. The last thing you want to do is run out! And don’t forget the baby wipes! You’ll want to find a soft cloth wipe, like Noodle & Boo’s Ultimate Cleansing Cloths. Our Ultimate Baby Ointment will also help create a moisture repellent barrier between the skin and the sources of irritation and is also great for ultra-dry skin, cradle cap and eczema.
Swaddling your baby has lot of benefits. It reminds them of being in the womb. It helps them sleep longer and it also helps stop the baby from crying from being over stimulated by their involuntary movements. Baby’s nails grow fast, and keeping them swaddled can also cut down on the scratches that they give themselves. We like the Pima Cotton Receiving Blankets by Kissy Kissy. They have just enough stretch and are the softest that we’ve found.
Onesies, warm footed sleepers or gowns and newborn hats are just a few essentials that you will use over and over again. Most recommend getting a 0-3 month size rather than newborn size because they fit a little better. Soft, soft, soft is all we can say. Our pick for some of the softest layette clothing is Gymboree; moderately prices and high quality, a lovely combination.
Crib or Bassinet
Even if you end up sleeping with baby in your bed, it’s important to have a crib or bassinet for day napping. Bassinets are nice to have for keeping your newborn close to you, but a traditional crib is fine too. Just make sure that whatever you use is safe and not on any recall list. We like the Ragazzi brand because the furniture is high quality and transitions from baby to child well. Learn more about Ragazzi at www.ragazzi.com.
